Booties

bootieNerd Let's talk about booties for a sec, and not the kind you're thinking about.

You know, booties - those lycra shoe covers that some people put over their cycling shoes.

I have some big thick ones I use in the winter, which help keep my feet from freezing in the cold rain.  This is acceptable usage of booties.

I've seen them used in time trials, where they allegedly give an aerodynamic advantage.  Also acceptable.

I've seen them used in road races, where they allegedly start to cross the line in my old-school retro grouch opinion.

And I've seen pictures (usually from SoCal) of them used in CYCLOCROSS, where they allegedly look retarded.  Add a sleeveless jersey with arm warmers and you're ready for a triathlon.

I have friends who do this, and I say it tongue in cheek.  But really, I just had to let it out.

agreed 100%. Booties are almost universally awful.

Booties are acceptable when you riding in a situation that your feedt are cold and/or wet (like riding into work this morning). Cross is the exception to this rule and I am not intolerant of those that wear them, I just think it is silly and a waste of money... booties are not
meant to be walked in or run in...

I tried wearing my booties on a mountain bike ride a few years back... It was cold and wet and it would have been nice if I hadn't destroyed them in the process... In these cases, an insulated sock/waterproof works much better (like a seal skin)
